Effects of Methimazole vs Propylthiouracil in Newborns: A Comparative Review

Hyperthyroidism is more common in women and the sensitivity of thyroid function changes during pregnancy. Excess levels hormones thioamides have a major impact on maternal fetal outcomes. Our aim was to perform an extensive literature review provide relevant details concerning analytical clinical aspects potential effects two main drugs used (methimazole propylthiouracil) newborns. A thorough conducted using PubMed Google Scholar databases. In total, 10 studies were identified data from these extracted then extrapolated into results after analysis. Three out four that methimazole carbimazole, one two, respectively, showed adverse outcomes requiring surgical management for congenital anomalies like aplasia cutis, patent vitellointestinal duct, gastroschisis. Out three propylthiouracil, baby underwent surgery bilateral pyelectasis, vesicovaginal fistula, anal stenosis, polydactyly. The findings aforementioned enough evidence imply use carbimazole treat antenatal hyperthyroidism has worse than propylthiouracil. Also, given paucity existing regarding propylthiouracil’s newborns, further this demographic are needed.
